This post is dedicated to one of my best friends of all time, who, with the joyous birth of her son this morning, was herself reborn - as a mother.
I wrote this a few weeks ago but, as I've been neglecting my little blog, hadn't gotten around to posting it yet. I figure today is the day to hit the "publish" button, since this everything I want her to know about motherhood. I only hope it isn't too dark for such a happy occasion.
As a mother, your life will be forever changed.
As a mother, you will have some of the highest highs and lowest lows you have ever experienced in life.
As a mother, you will come to know certain things. You will develop a sixth sense. You will become just the slightest bit clairvoyant.
As a mother, you will be a small being's source of nourishment, source of comfort, and whole world.
As a mother, you will know if your child is feverish just by brushing your lips against his forehead.
As a mother, you will sacrifice.
As a mother, your best self and your worst self will meet and shake hands. On a regular basis.
As a mother, you will be needed at just the moment when you thought you could give no more.
As a mother, you will dig down, dig in, dig deep.
As a mother, you will hold on.
As a mother, you will sometimes have to let go.
As a mother, you will deliver magic healing kisses.
As a mother, you will know a new, somewhat uncomfortable, level of vulnerability.
As a mother, you will be your own worst critic.
As a mother, you will find hidden reserves of patience you had no idea you possessed.
As a mother, you will worship ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes.
As a mother, you will experience an unearthly connection to another soul.
As a mother, you will make mistakes.
As a mother, you will have to forgive yourself.
As a mother, you will know a love like no other.

This Guy
Whoa. Extremely long, unintentional hiatus. Looks like I've got some 'splainin' to do. But that's another post for another day.
Today I'm going to keep it simple and share some recent iPhone pics. Seems like a good way to ease my toes back into the blogging pond.

Seven.
Seven. Seven whole months since I first held him, fed him, rocked him, felt his sweet little hand grasp my finger. Since I looked into his bright yet unfocused eyes and said, "Happy birthday, Baby." Seven months of sweet baby scent, milky smiles, excited kicks, flapping arms, and quiet snuggles. Seven months of sharing my world, my body, my moments with another tiny being. He's had my heart from the very beginning, but each day I wake to find that, somehow, though I wouldn't have believed it possible, my love for him has grown from the day before.

You Are...
You are smart.
You are focused.
You are inquisitive.
You are observant.
You are joyful.
You are feisty.
You are determined.
You are thoughtful.
You are honest.
And no matter what, never forget that your very existence makes me unbelievably happy.
“You is kind. You is smart. You is important.”
-Kathryn Stockett, The Help
And you, tiny one? You are a million rays of sunshine wrapped up in a snuggly, smiley, sleepy little package. The rest remains to be seen!

Moments.
I've started, deleted, and re-started this post about a billion times over the past month, but time and energy to put towards blogging, let alone processing my feelings, have been in short supply.
Things are getting better now, but we have been struggling. Not with the sleep deprivation that comes with a newborn, not with the growth spurts and 'round the clock feedings, the raw diaper rash, nor the gassiness of the tiny one, though I'm sure those exacerbate the situation somewhat.
No, we are dealing with the aftermath of having turned Lilah's little world upside down. First, we got pregnant and Mommy's energy levels and ability to be physical with her changed. Then we moved and sold and renovated. That was stressful on all of us. And then, just when things were getting back to some semblance of normalcy, we brought home a new baby and Lilah switched daycares. Cue dramatic disaster music. The perfect storm.
Behaviours surfaced that we have never seen from our sweet girl before. Hitting, kicking, biting, you name it, we've had it. The one saving grace is that she is taking it out on her parents, the ones who created all this change, and not on her baby brother. Fair enough.
And on top of it all, she's so very, very three.
All of this makes for a unique combination of frustration and guilt. It's been tough. But all we can do is weather the storm, try not to lose it too often, and know that it gets easier. It has to.
Admist all of this, though, there have been moments.
Joyful moments,
Endearing moments,
Sweet moments,
And, best of all, bonding moments.
These are the moments I hope will stick; the moments I want to bind to our history as a family and become part of our collective memory. To paraphrase my friend Jen: String together enough happy moments, and you end up with a happy life.

Saying Goodbye
Last week, we had to say goodbye to some very dear friends who are moving back to Australia. For two years, they have been just across the courtyard from us and now they will be across the world, on a whole other continent. To say that we are sad about the void they are leaving behind doesn't even begin to cover it.
We did, however, manage to cram in some pretty amazing moments on their last night here. The plan was a picnic dinner in the park, but the real highlights came spontaneously.
Running and climbing and wrestling,
streaking through the spray park in the buff (okay, that one was just the three-year-olds),
hugs and kisses all around,
And of course, lots and lots of smiles.
Goodbye, sweet friends. You will be dearly missed. You taught each of us so much in the last two years, not least of which was to expand Lilah's definition of family. She will grow up knowing that families don't necessarily have to consist of one mommy, one daddy, and their kid(s), but beyond that, and even more importantly, she now knows that friends, good friends, are the family you get to choose for yourself.
We are going to miss the moments we shared, but know that, even though you are far away for now, there will be many more of these moments to come.

Father & Daughter
"There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself." -John Gregory Brown

Young Love, Recyled
I posted these photos on a Wordless Wednesday in July last year, when these two were completely enamored of each other:
They're still great friends, but their relationship has changed a little. Now Lilah has taken to telling him she's the mommy and he's the baby and she gives him timeouts but refuses to give him hugs and kisses when it's time to say goodbye. Not sure what that says about my parenting...?
