When I Grow Up...

As a child, I thought I would be all sorts of things when I grew up.  What exactly I thought I would be depended on my age when asked, and mood and mindset at the time.  The thing is, I still don't feel that I have reached that magical, mystical age called "grown up" and there are still a great many things I might want to do or be.

My list of potential occupations, past and present, includes the following:

1. An artist.

2. A ballerina.

3. A camp counsellor.

4. A writer.

5. A babysitter.

6. A photographer.

7. A mixed martial arts fighter.

8. A marine biologist.

9. A speech-language pathologist.

10. A mother.

I'll leave it to you to work out which of these were the passing fancies of childhood, which have already been achieved, and which I am still toying with.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

  1. Around grade 2 I decided I wanted to be a nurse. We had to write a little paper on what we wanted to be when we great up and my paper was chosen to be read in front of the school. I was mortified. It went something like, 'When I grow up I want to be a nurse because I want to give people shots'. haha. Now I am a nurse but I don't particularly like having to give people shots.

    1. LOL, well aside from the shots you had things all figured out at a very early age!

  4. Now I have my paws out waiting for the big reveal. You might have to write a follow-up and give us the what-what on which things worked out for you. Good list, Erin

  5. One of the things I remember about growing up was that 50% of the people I knew wanted to be marine biologists. I've got nothing negative to say about the profession, don't get me wrong, but I've always wondered why it's so much more appealing to children than, say, a micro-biologist or a mountain creature biologist or what not. Great list!

  6. I went to college for speech pathology...I switched routes after the first semester and found myself in an interpreting program. Speech pathology still fascinates me!

Although a mixed martial artist would be pretty deng awesome. Badass Duck!

    1. Ha, I had no idea! I love my work as an SLP. It IS quite fascinating, particularly brain injury and aphasia. So far, I've only worked with kids, but someday I think I might like to work with aphasia patients.

  7. OK, I cheated and glanced at your bio on the sidebar. You've accomplished so many of these already.

  8. A babysitter and a mixed martial artist... Those two might go hand in hand! Although I'd say mixed martial artist ought to be a requirement for all moms! :D

    1. LOL, agreed. My martial arts training has served me well so far, and now that I have a boy, I'm sure my moves will come in handy in the not-too-distant future!

    1. LOL, I guess that's part of my current job description, isn't it? Except I get paid in hugs and kisses instead of pizza and cash.

  11. Oh camp counselor...I so wanted to do that, but I had to make more $ for college during the summers and never got to live that dream (outside of a week at outdoor school while I was in high school). Wonder if it's too late? :)

    1. I did this during my summers from age 17-19. It was a LOT of fun. Never too late to follow your dreams! And I suspect you'd get a lot more respect from your campers than I did at age 17. ;)
