Things I Know... Because I'm Their Mom

This week's Monday Listicles topic is "Things I Shouldn't Know," and I decided to go with a bit of a twist on this one.  About anybody else, I probably shouldn't know these things, but about my own kids?  Knowing these things is part of what defines me as their mother.

I know their internal temperature settings, and I can tell if one of them is feverish just by holding their hand or putting my lips to their forehead.

I know how to tuck them in just so.

I know what they are talking about or pointing to when no one else can figure it out.

I am intimately acquainted with their digestive systems, including what time of day they are likely to need bathroom visits or diaper changes, what faces they make when they are working on something, and other matters that would be considered private if I hadn't birthed them.

I know the name and whereabouts of each doll and stuffed animal that matters to them.  And if I don't, I'm in deep, deep trouble.

I know each of their tickle spots.  And I'm not afraid to use this knowledge.

I know how to give magical kisses that instantly fix boo-boos and owies.

I am acutely aware of their likes and dislikes, especially when food is involved.

I know how to make Lilah laugh until she cackles and snorts, and I know how to make Henry's secret dimple appear.

I know what makes them tick.

I know what true, fierce, and unconditional love feels like.

  3. Sniffle.

So true. Spending all that time with our kids means we know these little things that no one else could possible know. I know that if Theo coughs a certain cough even ONCE (literally one dry cough), I have to break out the ventalin or he'll end up n the ER. No one believed me but I knew it was the cough. It took almost a year for doctors to believe me.

    1. Oh, the coughs! I forgot to mention the coughs. I know that when Lilah coughs a certain way, she will most likely puke soon (my little puker!) and I know that Henry ALWAYS coughs before he sneezes, and he always sneezes twice in a row. Motherhood is in the details!

  4. That was so sweet. I miss my kids now that they are back to school. Summer went by too fast. The names of the stuffed animals and dolls really resonated with me. My 7yo still can't sleep without all his "furry friends" tucked around him.

    1. I can definitely relate. Lilah sleeps with a menagerie! Two baby dolls, two bunnies, a sea otter, two small teddies, two My Little Ponies (not exactly the snuggliest bedmates!), a monkey, and a rainbow hedgehog. Hope I'm not forgetting anyone! ;)

  6. I love your twist on this. It is amazing how we know things about our kids that no one else does. Although digestive system...I'd rather not know.

    1. Ha, true enough! Although they say that what comes out is a sign of how healthy things are on the inside... No, you're right, I'd be better off not knowing!

  7. What a sweet, sweet list. The one about knowing all their dolls made me giggle. I too have that knowledge. Being a Mom is just the best.
